You can do crunches to target this area and eventually achieve a decent level of fitness all in all.

If you really want to get things going in the right direction, you can end up looking into pull ups as well because of the fact that these exercises are going to take your upper body strength to a whole new level that you would never have though possible before. Try to do different kinds of pull ups so that you can develop functional strength.
