One story. Two couples.

I proposed on our first date.
She laughed and told me I was insane. Less than a day later, she said yes.
It was a whirlwind, but we were happy…
Until we got greedy and wanted a family.

It was a life I couldn’t give her, not for lack of trying. Fertility just wasn’t on our side. We sought out doctors and treatments. Spent money we didn’t have. Lied to our families. Smiled for our friends. Put on a brave face for a world that didn’t understand.
Finally, we were successful…
Until we were forced to bury our son.

We were left broken, battered, and destroyed.
They say love is in the details, but it was the details that ruined us.

This is the story of how I took back what had always been mine.
The retrieval of my wife and our family.

No cheating. Not a triangle.

I’ve had Retrieval in my to-be-read for quite some time now. I was afraid to even start it after all the raves and the “heartbreaking” comments in reviews. Now I am so glad I defied it and finally took the plunge. This is a story of 2 couples. Yes you read that right, TWO COUPLES.  When I started reading and found out there were more than dual POVs I got a little bit hesitant.  Worried that my growing perception of the main couple will dwindle along the way. But much to my surprise, my feelings didn’t sway. I loved Elisabeth’s, Roman’s, and Clare’s point of views. They were diverse and showed just the exact amount of knowledge a reader needs to experience. Elisabeth and Roman had a whirlwind, love at first sight kind of romance that was replayed in conjunction with their tumultuous current predicaments. Divorced but intensely still in love. Pride, promises broken, lack of communication, and devastating events in their married life clearly got in the way. They were enslaved by the emotions surrounding their high hopes of bearing a child and having their own brood. The collision and motivations of Elisabeth and Roman were so raw and truthful, strongly influencing the plot. I was like a shrink as I listened to them throw in blows of anger, honesty, acceptance and blinding love towards one another. Aside from their fervent energy, they were charming as a couple. The sexual tension and the release, balanced out the heavily laden tone of the story. Roman made me squeal and writhe while I rock back in forth in my seat wishing I have him as my knight in shining armor too. Elisabeth had a tough exterior coupled with a defenselessness that revealed her soft side. She was the perfect match for the sometimes overbearing and controlling Roman. Clare, to me was an outlier at the beginning, finding her to be a lost cause. But her strong personality boomed in the latter parts which gave the story an undercurrent of “hold tight” slash “mayday” feels. She was a dark horse!

Call me crazy, take me to the grave and bury me alive – no one can change my mind about my new discovery. Aly Martinez is one phenomenal, talented story teller. Retrieval seized me from the start and I was at the edge of my comfy seat until the end. She gave me a riveting story that is packed and full of everything you will want to experience. Elements that will draw you in were finely mixed – it was romantic and swoony in all the right moments, you will even laugh your heart out. But what got me devoted was the dramatic, suspense and action-filled narration that exquisitely swam with everything that I am used to.  Let me tell you that this book is quite short, only 253 pages. For me, adding more to its length will just create a haze to an already well written plot line. Having said that, it was nothing short of fantastic. The hook at the end of each chapter made the anticipation of turning the pages exciting for me. Aly Martinez has this talent for writing in an easy flowing manner, then she adds meek poetry that hits straight to your core. Every scene was recounted vividly enclosing you into the emotional world of Elisabeth, Roman and Clare. Oh, I was trapped. I just knew it.

There’s a lot of twisting and turning in Retrieval that will keep you motionless at the same time jittery. And there’s a lot of passion and hints of pleasantries that will make you fall in love all over again. A beautiful story of forgiveness and fighting for your family. For your HOME. Just doing all there is in your power, strip yourself of skin and bones for the happiness of those that hold your heart. Fly high (prepare to fall down too) and read this book. Retrieval rocked my world!
